I am so happy to see D E Stevenson's books being reissued in electronic format. I first read her gentle romances when I was high school 50 years ago, and it gives me great pleasure to discover that they have not lost their charm over the years.

This book, as so many of hers written during the years of WWII, don't give the h/h the HEA they deserve because the war wasn't over. No one, including the author, could know how things would turn out. They could only hope, and they were hoping against hope in England. We know that the right side won, but the characters in the story can't be sure of that.

Antonia, the weaker sister, is dependent on and defended by her much stronger sister, Lou. Their parents are so involved in bickering with each other that they have very little attention left over to pay to their children, so it comes as quite a shock when Lou marries and moves to India with her husband. The shock is even greater when Tonia is loved by a man old enough to be her father. She marries him to escape her parents, a fact not overlooked by him. He also knows that she will be a young widow and does his best to protect her from the risks that will go along with that status.

The real heart of the book is what happens after that, the choices she makes, the strengths she discovers inside herself, and the final love she finds.

This is all given to us with loving details of houses and peoples that demonstrate over and over again the power of Stevenson's keen observation of the people around her. She is kind and gentle, but never foolish.

A reader could do worse than take her for an example.

Very enjoyable book. I have just recently "discovered" D.E. Stevenson and have been reading all of her books that I can find. It's my hope that they will kindle all of them!
When I first read this story years ago, it haunted me because I too am a quiet person who had to learn how to become my own advocate. It helped me. I love to reread her novels.
... And that's the best word I have for it. It's very quiet and intensely of its time and place; what it reminds me of most is The Scent of Water, by Elizabeth Goudge. This one engages WWII much more intimately than anything else I've read by Stevenson. There's a bit during the Blitz that's almost a minute-by-minute rendition of the confusion during a raid, but more than anything else it's about love -more than one kind of love - and the courage to meet life as a friend.
I would be embarrassed if one of my literary friends caught me reading Stevenson's books but I love them so much. It's like escaping to a
quiet, satisfying life surrounded by dear people in the gorgeous English countryside. I want to live there for a while and I get to when I read her books. These books, as well as Miss Read's let me live my secret life away from all today's troubles. Refreshing and so peaceful.....
Another great read from one of my favorite authors. Tonia lives in the shadow of her much-loved sister, who one day elopes unexpectedly, leaving Tonia to face life with her uncaring parents alone. An unexpected friendship turns into a happy marriage which helps Tonia gain self confidence. I don't want to give away too much of what happens, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If you've read many D.E. Stevensons, look for appearances of old friends from some of her other novels.
i read these books ages ago but decided I needed something soothing to read with the Way things are in the U.S. today. They remind me that there is a strength in people and that someday,( hopefully soon) we will be able to live peacefully without the haters .
I love this story of D. E. Stevenson's. It is fun to trace the relationships, if you have read other earlier books of Stevenson's. The book is a slight spoiler if you are planning on tracking down those earlier out-of-print tales of the same Scottish family. But this book about a physically awkward and shy girl who finally gets up enough courage to leave her less than pleasant parents' home and make a life for herself is wonderful and set firmly during the events of WWII.
