*Audible edition*This was a pretty typical NA, M/F story... and by that I mean it was terrible.
I'm all for forbidden romances, but this one was ridiculous. Knox is a bad boy with a sex addiction, and McKenna is his virgin sex addiction counselor. First of all, in what kind of world would that happen? But don't think about it too much because logic is not this story's friend.
In the first scene, Knox is pretty bad ass... and by that I mean hot tempered and crazy. He is punching holes in his wall, ordering a girl to give him a blow job, and acting like an insane person. Interestingly enough, I would have kind of enjoyed reading a book about a person that messed up. But for some reason, after that scene, Knox settles down and becomes this tame little puppy.
In order to impress McKenna, or due to some sort of noble longing (??), he suddenly stops whoring himself... which makes me wonder why they set him up as a sex addict if it was so easy to break him of that habit? No sense...
He is also the guardian of his younger brothers (awwwww), which makes me wonder again who was caring for everyone while he was out getting it on? His teenage brothers maybe? This book tried to simultaneously paint him as uber-responsible and uber-irresponsible.
And don't even get me started on McKenna. Poor sweet naive virginal McKenna, who's sexuality miraculously came alive when she saw Knox for the first time. Where have I heard that before?
Worse than the flat, formulaic characters was the repetitiveness of the book. Yes, we get that he has dreamy eyes and an awesome body. Yes, we get that you feel guilty over your parents' death, McKenna. Yes, we get that you like to smirk, Knox.
And the dom/sub dynamic that was strangely inserted into the story? McKenna isn't a submissive as much as she is insecure and mousy.
Remind me not to read any more NA for next time, please.

When I Break edition by Kendall Ryan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
When I Break is a three part series by Kendall Ryan that focuses on Knox and McKenna. I'm not one for a same character series with cliff hangers, so I read all three as one book versus three separate books. Therefore, I'm reviewing it as one.
Knox is the sexy, hunky alpha male that inherited the parent role to three younger brothers. He works multiple jobs to keep everyone well fed and well cared for. To numb himself from the loss and increased responsibility, he over indulges in alcohol and random sex. He gets into some difficulty and has court ordered therapy. The last place he expected to be was a sex addict group session. McKenna is the beautiful, young addiction counselor who also happens to be hiding behind her own guilt and baggage. Together they find the healing they both secretly crave.
The topic of sex addiction is a tough one for me to watch. I stuck with it and I began to enjoy it. That's not to say that I didn't waffle in my struggles to get through parts of it in the early stages of development, however, I was sold by the end.
I loved Knox. Although I had struggles with his addiction, I liked him as a person. I liked his alpha, strength, dedication and family loyalty; yet, I also liked his soft side and vulnerability. I didn't like McKenna much. I liked her helping nature, but I disliked her tears at the mere hint of difficulty and/or insecurities with Knox. In that fashion, she was weak.
It was well written with well developed characters. There were a few editing errors, primarily missing words, but nothing numerous to make it too distracting overall. Additionally, amongst all of the baggage, it was a sweet story about redemption. Although it was an emotional roller coaster, underneath the chaos, the foundation was solid.
Ryan was a master with humorous and complex supporting characters. I truly desire a continuation (or spin off) for the remaining Bauer brothers. It couldn't hurt to further develop Brian and Amanda as well. There are so many different directions that Ryan can lead us and I hope it's a consideration for the near future.
All in all, I loved When I Break. It truly grew on me and I long for more.
This book, my God, the feelings!!!!!!!
Finished it last night, and I have written and deleted this review 3 times. I can't put into words how much I love this book. Everything Kendall Ryan for me is a must read, and this one is definitely a MUST read. Her ability to write these characters that you feel so connected to, and stories that make you feel so much, it always amazes me.And this book, is one of her best!!
Knox is a sex addict, he uses sex to cope with his past. McKenna is a counselor, she is a "fixer", her way to cope with her past is helping others and rescuing people, and volunteering her time. They meet, and their connection is crazy. They need each other, and the sexual chemistry is off the charts!! They were some moments i felt like screaming and throwing my kindle out the window "Bradley Cooper on Silver Linings" style. And some moments i felt like hugging the characters, and yes I'll admit it, they were some tears too.
I can't say much more about the book without giving spoilers, and you don't want spoilers, you want to experience it!! Just know that you NEED to read it.
I felt pretty cheated on this book. A "good" author shouldn't have to end a book mid-scene to ensure the readers buy a second book by them...which is clearly the purpose of this new trend in books. It didn't even end at a reasonable stopping point, like in a good series, just straight up ends mid scene with not even the slightest resolution. It was like ending the book at the climax. STOP MAKING ONE BOOK INTO THREE....if it's one book, it's one book.
The characters lacked credibility. Ages didn't align with supposed life achievements. There are no real 21 year old therapists. Chances of practicing any form of psychiatry without a master's degree are minimal. And no senior in high school would have been given custody of three younger siblings.
Also not sure why the author is romanticizing and idealizing such an unprofessional relationship. Just an overall disappointment.
