First, let me say that I am a huge Sophie Kinsella fan; that when it comes to chick lit, she is the best of the best. I own all her books, whether in digital format, hard copy or even hard cover. I recommend them to friends, and there's not a one who hasn't enjoyed them.

So it was with great excitement that I downloaded this latest. Briefly, Becky, Luke and Minnie move to LA for a few months so Luke can better work for and with actress Sage Seymour. Becky being Becky, you expect her to get into all sorts of mishaps, and she does, some of them funny, some of them a little more perplexing. In the meantime, Suze and Tarquin and their brood follow Becky across the Atlantic, Alicia Bitch Long Legs (Billingsley) reappears, Becky's father plays an unexpected role, another Rebecca shows up -- and -- SPOILER ALERT! -- the story ends there. Right in the middle, with Becky and crew heading off to Las Vegas and into a sequel.

Now I am aware that there are many books in the Shopaholic series, which can certainly be called sequels, but each of them is a self-contained entity with a complete story. That's the way chick lit works -- it ties everything up at the end. Which isn't the way my life works, but I read these precisely because they take me out of my life and because I WANT to see things work out (and Kinsella usually has some ingenious tricks to achieve that end). I do not like cliff hangers. As far as I'm concerned, this is just a cruddy gimmick to make me buy the next book. Cheap trick, Sophie -- I expected better of you!

Shopaholic to the Stars Sophie Kinsella 9780812993868 Books Reviews

**Contains minor spoilers**

This book was all over the place and had little focus. Gone is the fun, ditzy Becky to be replaced by a desperate and utterly vapid Becky. Sure, she's always been somewhat selfish but not to the point where she is downright reprehensible to her friends and family. I wanted to throttle her several times!

There were also so many different story lines which didn't really fit together well and went mostly unresolved The return of Alicia and her motiviations; her dad's mysterious storyline; the introduction of another Rebecca; the introduction of a cult-like spiritual improvement center; Tarquin and Suze drama; throw in some Elinor and Luke drama... This is all in addition to Becky's desperate attempt to become a Hollywood stylist--which is the only thing that is resolved adequately (though quickly) in the novel. Everything else is left up in the air for the sequel.

The only redeeming thing is that it *appears* that Becky may have finally gotten a wake-up call at the end of the book. I hope that she actually grows in the next novel and stops being so ridiculous and selfish.
Ms Kinsella I hate to be mad at you, Oh how I loved the first few books in this series!!! I read Shopaholic takes Manhattan in ONE night and laughed out loud several times. But this one lacked the camaraderie I once felt for Becky. She was over the top selfish, to the point of unbelievable. The story felt convoluted and bizarre. The whole Tarkie being taken in by a cult was just weird and did not do anything to help the story. Also the continual buildup of Becky's father's "secret" got old really fast. There were too many story lines happening at once, without enough time to flesh them out. Becky should be grownup by now, but frankly she is worse that she ever was. It is not cute anymore. Give me back the sweet Becky who may be impulsive, but also has a good heart. I did not feel that Becky here at all. ALSO DO NOT LEAVE A SUDDEN CLIFHANGER!!!!! That was such a slap in the face after putting up with this book. The one thing I was actually in suspense about was Graham's story, and we got a "coming soon" REALLY????
What's the deal here? Kinsella builds up three separate story lines, one involving two feuding celebrities, one with Becky's father and the third with Tarquin and Suze, and then abruptly ends the book without resolving any of them. Unbelievable. And now we have to wait and wait and finally pay for another Shopoholic book simply to find out the ending of this book that I already paid for and invested time into? How about just give me my wasted time and money back? This book isn't even funny and Becky is no longer charming, but selfish and destructive and boring. It's not just that you have to buy a second book, but it's not even out yet! I'm on vacation and I want to finish the story while I have this leisure time. Not come back to it months later when it's no longer fresh in my mind. What a rip-off.
I am a huge Sophie Kinsella/Shopaholic fan and pre-ordered this book months ago. I wish I hadn't.

I was disappointed in this book. I agree with the review that said too much time was devoted to characters like Sage and Lois and not nearly enough to the usual cast including Suze, Minnie, even Janice the neighbor.

The bigger issue for me was the lack of a conclusion. I didn't plan on purchasing a serialized novel or what amounts to half a book. So much of the plot of the novel was centered upon Golden Peace, Suze and Tarquin, and Becky's dad. Yet Kinsella left her readers dangling. People purchasing a novel don't deserve a "To be continued".
"Part One" should have been displayed on the front cover. All of the other books in this series completed their story by the end of the book. There was no reason to believe that this book would be any different. It is misleading and annoying to find out that you have to purchase another book or books to finish the story! I have always enjoyed the Shopaholic series as a light read that made me laugh out loud, however, I had a hard time getting myself to finish this one. ALL of the characters seemed self-centered and shallow, not just the ones from Hollywood. I found myself cringing a lot and then to come to the end without any resolution was the last straw. I don't think I will be spending any more money on this series. If you want to enjoy stories about a husband who has connections with movie stars and a scheming wife who would do anything to get into the business, check out the old I Love Lucy shows. Much funnier!!
